2008
Even seasonal conditions have resulted in a 2008 vintage to remember after
the frost affected 2007 vintage. It was a slightly early vintage with harvest
commencing in the second week of March for Sauvignon Blanc and the majority
of the Cabernet harvested by early May.
Spring rains led to an even budburst and early strong growth followed by even
warm temperatures through December and January. Flowering and fruit set was even
and full, followed by a dry autumn for perfect ripening conditions post veraison.
Intense rains that adversely affected many of Australia's warm climate wine regions
during veraison did not appear in the high altitudes of the Southern Highlands
and therefore disease levels on all blocks were virtually non-existent giving
excellent clean fruit at harvest.
Precise viticulture and management ensured crop loads were moderate with an average
sized volume harvested. Again it is projected due to an increasing high demand,
that there will be a shortfall in Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir from this excellent
vintage.
Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon produced moderate crops with concentrated
varietal notes and clean crisp balanced palates. The Pinot Gris reached its usual
high maturity levels, which enables us to make the full bodied Pinot Gris style
Cuttaway has received many accolades and awards for in past vintages. Pinot Noir,
Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon all cropped lightly to produce intense varietal
characters, tannin ripeness and balance across the board.
First impressions of the 2008 wines are of concentrated aromatic whites and complex
balanced reds. In our opinion the 2008 vintage will be known for abundant varietal
flavour, balance and complexity in all white and red wines across the range.
